The role of the planning board is to ensure the promotion of public health, safety, morals, convenience and efficiency in the process of community development. The Board serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of County Commissioners.

Prairie County has a 5-person land planning board. Members are appointed to a 3-year term by the Board of County Commissioners.

Functions of the Board include:

 Administration of county subdivision review
 Drafting of Growth Policy
