MOTOR VEHICLE LICENSING
The Montana Department of Justice, Title & Registration
Bureau regulates the issuance of vehicle license plates.
- Vehicles are licensed for a one-year period, by
the County Treasurer in the county where the vehicle is
subject to tax or fee. - The registration period
changes as ownership changes, so an expiration date no
longer stays with the vehicle. All transferred vehicles
will begin their registration period anew, effective
whenever a transfer of ownership occurs. - The
new owner will pay for titling fees and register the
vehicle for a period of 12 months. - Light vehicles
11 years and older may be permanently licensed. All
trailers, motorcycles, off-highway vehicles, snowmobiles
and boats are permanently licensed. Upon ownership
changes the new owner will pay for titling fees and
again permanently license the vehicle. - When
purchasing a vehicle a 40-day temporary trip permit may
be issued allowing time for the paperwork to arrive at
the Treasurer’s Office previous to titling and
registering the vehicle
